😮 Google’s AI Mode expands globally, adds new agentic features

Image: Google News

Google is expanding AI Mode to 180 new countries (English); more languages/regions coming.

  • New agentic features: book restaurant reservations now; local services & event tickets coming next.

  • Reservation flow supports multiple prefs (party size, date/time, location, cuisine) and checks real-time availability across platforms.

  • Personalized results (starting with dining) use your past searches/clicks & chats; settings adjustable in your Google Account.

  • U.S.-only preview for now via Labs’ “Agentic capabilities in AI Mode” for Google AI Ultra subscribers ($249.99/mo).

  • New Share button lets you send an AI Mode response so others can jump into the same conversation (trip/party planning, etc.).

❇️Google and Grok are catching up to ChatGPT, says a16z’s latest AI report

a16z’s latest consumer AI report says Gemini, Grok, and (to a lesser extent) Meta AI are closing the gap with ChatGPT.

  • Top products (5th time running): ChatGPT, Perplexity, Poe, Character AI, Midjourney, Leonardo, Veed, Cutout, ElevenLabs, Photoroom, Gamma, QuillBot, Civitai, Hugging Face.

  • Also consistent: Claude, DeepAI, Janitor AI, Pixelcut, Suno (on all but the first report).

  • Google momentum: four separate entries—Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, Google Labs—now tracked individually.

  • Gemini vs. ChatGPT: Gemini is #2 on web and mobile; ~90% of its MAUs are on Android; web visits ≈ 12% of ChatGPT’s.

  • Grok’s surge: #4 on web, #23 on mobile, ~20M MAUs; traffic jumped ~40% after Grok 4 launched (July 2025).

  • Meta AI: #46 on web, not in top mobile—hurt by a recent privacy misstep.

  • Growth trends: DeepSeek down (−22% mobile; >−40% web from Feb ’25); Perplexity up; Claude mixed (flat on mobile, growing on web).

  • China’s footprint: On the web top 20—Quark (#9), Doubao (#12; #4 mobile), Kimi (#17); 22 of top 50 mobile apps were developed in China (only 3 primarily used there).

  • Newcomers: Lovable and Replit debut; near-misses include PixAI, Bolt, Blackbox AI, Clipchamp, Getliner (web) and Talkie, Seekee, Photo AI, AI Mirror, Arvin (mobile).

  • Methodology: traffic data from Similarweb (web) and Sensor Tower (mobile).

⚡911 centers are so understaffed, they’re turning to
AI to answer calls

YC S22 startup Aurelian pivoted from salon bookings to an AI voice assistant that offloads non-emergency 911 calls.

  • Raised $14M Series A led by NEA.

  • Triage for noise/parking/stolen wallet; auto-routes real emergencies to human dispatchers; files reports for follow-up.

  • Live since May 2024 in 12+ dispatch centers (e.g., Snohomish County, Chattanooga, Kalamazoo), handling thousands of calls daily.

  • Adoption fueled by severe understaffing & burnout; NEA says it replaces roles departments couldn’t fill.

  • Competitors (Hyper, Prepared) exist, but Aurelian claims to be the only one live at scale.

💫Image editing in Gemini just got a major upgrade

Google upgraded native image editing in the Gemini app with a new DeepMind model.

  • Big win: keeps people & pets looking like themselves across edits.

  • New tricks: costume/location swaps, blend multiple photos, multi-turn edits (tweak parts without changing the rest), and style transfer between images.

  • You can re-upload edits to make a short video in Gemini.

  • All outputs include a visible watermark and SynthID.
