Mark Roberge Part 2 | AI Native vs. Adapted Companies: Winning Strategies for the Future of Business
Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, is poised to raise $6 billion at a pre-money valuation of $18 billion, securing about one quarter of the company for investors in an upcoming deal that is expected to close in the next few weeks. The terms of the deal have been revised upward from an initial $3 billion raise at a $15 billion valuation due to high investor demand, with prominent firms like Sequoia Capital and Future Ventures, along with other close associates of Musk, actively participating.
The OpenAI Startup Fund, which is related but technically separate from OpenAI, recently closed a $15 million tranche through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), with contributions from two unnamed investors, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. This marks the second instance of capital raising through an SPV for the fund, which invests in early-stage AI-related companies across various sectors and is managed by Ian Hathaway, who took formal control from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman earlier this year.
Google's Gemini is a suite of generative AI models developed by DeepMind and Google Research, offering three versions: Gemini Ultra, Gemini Pro, and Gemini Nano, each designed for different levels of performance and device compatibility, with capabilities extending beyond text to include audio, images, and videos.
Gemini distinguishes itself with its models' ability to perform multimodal tasks and is being integrated into Google's various platforms, including mobile devices and development tools, with plans for expansion into more devices and possibly an upcoming iOS update.
Despite its potential, early feedback suggests Gemini has room for improvement in accuracy and practical application, with its cost-effectiveness and true capabilities still to be fully realized as it continues to develop and expand.
