❇️Google DeepMind’s new AI model helps
historians interpret ancient texts

Aeneas is the first AI model built to contextualize ancient inscriptions, helping historians restore, date, and attribute fragmentary Latin texts. Developed in collaboration with top universities, Aeneas processes text and images to identify parallels across over 176,000 Latin inscriptions, making sense of incomplete or damaged artifacts within seconds.

Key innovations include:

  • Restoring unknown-length gaps in inscriptions

  • Predicting geographical origin using visual + textual inputs

  • Top-tier accuracy in restoration and dating tasks

  • Enhancing historian workflows with interpretable, collaborative AI suggestions

Available now for free use at predictingthepast.com, Aeneas is set to transform how we explore the ancient world.

⚡Google Photos adds AI features for ‘remixing’ photos in different styles, turning pics into videos

Google Photos is rolling out new AI features that let users turn still photos into six-second video clips and “remix” images into anime, comics, sketches, or 3D styles. These tools will be available under a new “Create” tab alongside existing collage and highlight video tools.

  • Photo-to-Video: Choose a photo and apply effects like “Subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky” to animate it using the Veo 2 model.

  •  Remix: Instantly transform photos into creative styles using Imagen, Google’s AI image model.

  • Both tools are experimental — user feedback via thumbs-up/down will help refine them.

  • AI-generated content includes invisible watermarks (SynthID) to mark authenticity.

Availability:

  • Photo-to-Video: Rolling out now in the U.S. on Android & iOS

  • Remix: Coming in the next few weeks

  • Create Tab: Launches in August
